Occupying my usual space in the backyard I hear a helicopter and lean my head backwards to see if I can see it. I can't, but my eye gets caught on a palm tree in my neighbours' yard.
I love noticing palm trees. For me a palm tree signifies an exotic location. A palm tree is so far away from every kind of tree I grew up with, and living in a country where they are everyday things makes my heart swell.
I saw a clip on a news program from somewhere in Queensland, and it immediately brought the smell of Brisbane to me. I miss that feeling when it is hot and humid and just walking around feels like taking a bath. I swam in the air every day on my lunch break in the last months I lived there.
No, I lied. I get it here too some days. And it really isn't too pleasant when you're really there.
